The Organisation
Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30. Rotaract clubs are either community or university based, and they’re sponsored by a local Rotary club. This makes them true "partners in service" and key members of the family of Rotary.
As one of Rotary’s most significant and fastest-growing service programs, with more than 8,400 clubs in about 170 countries and geographical areas, Rotaract has become a worldwide phenomenon.
The Movement
Rotaract stands for “Rotary in Action”. It was officially inaugurated by Rotary International President Luther Hodges in January 1968, which means Rotaract Movement is celebrating its 43rd Year. Rotaract Club of North Charlotte, chartered on 13th March 1968 at North California was the first club. The decision to adopt the program came at a time when student protests worldwide were of growing concern to Rotarians. Hence, Rotaract was evolved as the tool to synergise the energies of the young adults into positive activities that could benefit their community. Rotaract originally began as a Rotary International youth programme. 43 years later it continues to experience its phenomenal growth. There are currently more that 7,500 Rotaract Clubs spread over 155 countries, with an estimated membership of more than 173,000 Rotaractors. The program continues to grow making it a true global movement with motto of ‘Self Development through Service and Fellowship'.
